Divination is the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means. There are many situations in life when one wants answers to a difficult question. Questions about one's daily life are common. For example, how should I approach a job interview? How will my upcoming trip go? Should I get a puppy?
Today, it is common to use physical tools in order to practice divination. These methods can include: tarot cards, runes, crystal pendulums, scrying with water/fire, crystal balls, etc. These physical items are used as a focus point to help communicate with one's personal Guides, someone else's Guides, or Spirits in general. This is similar to using a telephone in order to communicate with someone that you cannot physically see in front of you.

Scientifically, we need to first explain energy connections. All things in the Universe are connected through energy. First, we understand scientifically that energy cannot be destroyed. The Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only converted from one form of energy to another. For example, when a tree dies, its body break downs and decomposes to form compost for the surrounding trees. They use that compost as energy to fuel their lives. The energy of the original tree was only borrowed and when it didn't need it anymore, that energy is transferred to the next living thing.
Another scientific way to look at energy connection is that all things on Earth are made up of the same elements on the periodic table. Take a moment to look around you. That chair that you're sitting on, that phone that you're holding, that air that you're breathing in are all made from a combination of elements. The human body is 60% water, which we know to be H2O, or Hydrogen and Oxygen. What else on Earth has hydrogen? Plants, animals, electricity, heat, power, petroleum, fertilizer and more. We are elementally connected to all things on Earth.
Of course there are things in this world that cannot be explained by science. Many cultures throughout time have placed a priority on seeking answers from other worldly Beings and spiritual explanations were once popular. People who have the ability to communicate with Spirits are commonly known as psychics. However, through intense dedication and practice, one can develop this ability. One of these practice methods is through the use of tools, or divination. Most religions believe in divination, even if they don't use that word to describe the action. Some call it prayer beads, the Bible, crystal balls, sitting in your backyard watching the birds, etc. Whatever your belief, it is important to find the tool that best fits with your personal life.
